Arcola United Methodist Church, Mission Trip to Rio Bravo, Mexico
Last summer, Dr. Luce and Beth Shelton, LVT traveled to Mexico in support of a mission trip organized by Arcola United Methodist Church. Pastor Chris Riedel approached Aldie Veterinary Hospital requesting the need for a Veterinarian to provide services to this small community in need of many things including homes for the residents, schools for the children and medical services for both pets and humans.Over the four day stay, Dr. Luce, Beth Shelton, and a group of Senior High School students from the church examined and provided medical care and treatments to over 100 dogs. Surprisingly, they did not see one kitty.
"It was like practicing MASH medicine," said Dr. Luce when describing the creative ways he had to treat the sick dogs. Most of the dogs were treated for vomiting, diarrhea, parasites, and flea and tick infestation. In addition, vaccinations were given as a preventative measure.
During the stay in Mexico, Dr. Luce sought out a local veterinarian and donated the medical instruments (stethoscope, otoscope, opthalmascope) he brought with him. "These are just basic instruments that every Veterinarian should own," he said.
The mission was such a success that the residents of Rio Bravo and the Mexico Mission Director has asked Dr. Luce to return next year.
